An insinkerator (or "garbage disposal unit") is a kitchen appliance used to grind and dispose of food materials down the sink. Our licensed plumbers can repair, replace and install all types and brands of insinkerators.

Important maintainance advice:

Garbage disposal units have a reputation for being unreliable, but the most common causes of malfunction in this appliance are completely avoidable by the user. These include:

Never run with hot water

Cold water causes grease and fats to harden and makes them easier to move through the pipes. In hot water, grease will instead dissolve and could take longer to move through the unit and drains.

Always have the water running

The cold water needs to be turned on before the insinkerator. Do not turn water off until you are sure all food has been flushed out of the unit and the insinkerator has been turned off at the switch. It should be obvious when food has been disposed of, as the sound of food being ground up by the blades will eventually cease.

Don't overload

It is important to make sure you don't overload the garbage disposal unit. Food items need to be disposed of gradually to avoid the unit shutting down and jamming. No grease of fat should be put down the sink.

Only food items

Do not put non-food items into your insinkerator. Plumbers commonly remove aluminium foil, glass and plastic when repairing jammed garbage disposal units.

Cleaning

Garbage disposal units are cleaned every time they are run. However, if you notice a smell coming from your sink and/or build up on the blades, it is a good idea to manually clean every few weeks. This is easy to do. Simply use the insinkerator to dispose of ice, the way you would do with any other food product. To get rid of any further smells, cutting up and grinding a lemon should be effective.
